ROUNDUP : Win Puts Canyons on Brink of WSC Title

R.J. Simone gave up five hits and two unearned runs to lead College of the Canyons to a 13-2 victory over Oxnard on Saturday in a Western State Conference baseball game. Simone (7-0) survived six Canyons errors.

Keith Halcovich hit a three-run triple to key an eight-run eighth inning. Andy Shaw and Heath McElwee each had two hits and two runs batted in for Canyons (24-7, 21-3 in conference play), which can clinch a share of the conference championship with a victory Tuesday against Moorpark.

In other college baseball games:

Valley 6-4, Santa Barbara 5-0 (1st game, 12 innings)--Willie Rivera (8-3) picked up wins in both games, throwing 125 pitches in 12 consecutive innings and allowing no walks or runs in WSC action at Santa Barbara.

The first game was the continuation of a March 23 contest. With the score tied, 5-5, Rivera entered in the 10th and earned the win when Vic Seper singled home Ozzie Areu in the 12th with the winning run. Rivera recorded eight strikeouts in the regularly scheduled game. Jamie Zeichick knocked in two runs for Valley (18-13, 17-8).

Cal Lutheran 2-3, Whittier 0-2--Mike Winslow (7-0) gave up four singles and struck out five in the first game of a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader at Whittier.

The Kingsmen (26-6, 16-2) overcame a 2-0 deficit in the second game. Gabe Diaz went three for four.

The Master’s 12-7, Biola 2-5--Chris Beck took a no-hitter into the eighth inning and won his 21st game in his Mustang career, setting a school record, in the first game of an NAIA District 3 sweep.

Bakersfield 7, Pierce 3--The Brahmas (19-13, 16-9) had only four hits and trailed, 7-0, after eight innings.

Moorpark 6, Cuesta 4--Steve Bernstein had four hits and drove in the tying run in the seventh inning for the host Raiders (18-18, 12-13) in a WSC game.

COLLEGE SOFTBALL

Cerritos tournament--Antelope Valley (35-7) amassed 22 hits in victories over East L. A., 4-1, and Chaffey, 6-0, in the double-elimination tournament at Cerritos.

Against East L. A., Margaret Perez led off with a school-record 11th triple of the season. Yvette Allen went five for seven.

HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL

Harvard-Westlake 11, Bishop Montgomery 10--Harvard-Westlake’s John Russell converted a seventh-inning single into the game-winning play when he circled the bases after a throwing error to help the host Wolverines (5-11, 3-5) recover from a nine-run deficit in a Mission League game at Franklin Field.

Crespi 7-8, St. Bernard 5-3--The visiting Celts hit seven home runs in the doubleheader. The first game counted as a Mission League game, the second as a nonleague game. Jeff Suppan hit his seventh homer of the season, a school record. Brad Farlow and Brad Wright each hit two homers (17-2, 8-0) in the first game. Keith Evans and Casey Snow also homered.

BOYS’ TRACK & FIELD

Southern California Showdown--Taft junior Andre DeSaussure ran a personal best of 47.29 seconds to finish second in the 400 meters behind Edward Turner of Morningside (47.05) in the meet at Drake Stadium held in conjunction with the Arizona-USC-UCLA triangular. DeSaussure moved to third on the all-time region list behind Quincy Watts of Taft (46.67 in 1988) and Ron Williams of Chatsworth (46.74 in ‘77).

In other events, Margarito Casillas of Hoover finished second in the mile with a personal best of 4 minute 18.30 seconds and Tony Serpas of Birmingham placed third in the 100 meters in 10.97.

Rio Mesa 90, Camarillo 56--Dennis Stephens won two individual events and helped Rio Mesa’s 400- and 1,600-meter relay teams to victories in a nonleague meet.

Stephens timed 23.3 seconds in the 200 and 50.4 in the 400.

Camarillo’s Jeremy Fischer leaped 6 feet 10 inches and 21-5 to win the high jump and long jump.

GIRLS’ TRACK & FIELD

Rio Mesa 108, Camarillo 19--The host Spartans, who clinched their eighth consecutive Channel League title Thursday, won 14 of 15 events in a nonleague meet.

Laura Saw won the 100 low hurdles (14.9) and 300 lows (47.4) and teammate Tina Schroyer won the 1,600 (5:41.0) and 3,200 (12:11.8) for Rio Mesa (10-0).

COLLEGE TRACK & FIELD

BFI Meet of Champions--Teresa Strickland of Cal State Northridge set a meet record at Azusa Pacific, throwing the shot 47 feet 10 inches. Strickland also won the discus with a distance of 153-9.

Charlotte Vines won the 100 meters in 11.91. Northridge’s men won the 400 relay in 40.83.

COLLEGE GOLF

BYU Cougar Classic--Cal State Northridge’s Dennis Arnst shot a one-under 215 to finish sixth.

The Matadors shot 888, finishing in a three-way tie for sixth. UNLV won the tournament with an 859.

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

Royal d. Loyola, 13-15, 14-16, 15-5, 15-4, 15-13--Josh White tied a school record with 90 assists for the host Highlanders (11-0) in a nonleague match. Steve Hodge and Jason Hughes each had 34 kills for Royal.
