MOORPARK : College to Hold Multicultural Day

Share

Finding common ground is the theme of Moorpark College’s third annual “Multicultural Day” to be held at the college Wednesday.

Patti Dozen, coordinator of the college’s Center for Learning Assistance Services and one of three organizers of the event, said the day is intended as a way to expose students to other cultures.

“There’s performers, there’s music, food, vendors, lecturers, singers, dancers--all on cultural diversity,” Dozen said. “Because this campus is still probably 90% Caucasian, this is their opportunity to understand other cultures.”

More than 30 free activities are planned, all of which are open to the public, students and staff. The programs will run from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Scheduled performers include an ensemble of Latin drums, traditional ceremonial Mexican warrior dances, a 35-piece steel drum band from Cal State Long Beach, and traditional dances of Samoa, Hawaii, Tahiti and New Zealand.

Multicultural topics will be covered by a variety of lecturers, including Jan Hardy and Sue Davenport, who will discuss their organization of softball games between residents of Simi Valley and Los Angeles.

The theme of “finding common ground” was chosen with an eye toward the rioting that hit Los Angeles last year, Dozen said, and a hope that future unrest can be prevented by ethnic groups coming together through shared understanding.
