Micheal Williams’ Free-Throw Streak Reaches NBA-Record 84
Micheal Williams of the Minnesota Timberwolves set the NBA record for consecutive free throws Sunday, making 10 of 10 in a season-ending 113-111 victory over Utah to increase his streak to 84. That’s six more than Calvin Murphy’s previous record of 78, set in 1981.
“I want to get to 100,” Williams said. “This really means a lot to me, to get the record and continue it next season.”
He’ll have all summer to practice--or not practice. During the last off-season, Williams said he spent very little time on his free-throw shooting.
“I don’t know why,” he said. “The key to free throws is taking them seriously. The closer I got to the record the more serious I got.”
Williams, a fourth-year guard from Baylor, made his 78th consecutive free throw with 11:17 to play in the third quarter. After a moment’s cheering, with fans and teammates on their feet, he stepped back up to the line and made the record-breaker.
Williams made 90.7% of his free throws this season to rank fourth in the NBA. He made 21 in his last two games after attempting only one in the previous three games.
