Baseball Hall of Famer Joe DiMaggio became ill during a trip to Italy and was under medical care at his hotel in Rome, according to a published report.

The San Francisco Chronicle reported in today’s editions that DiMaggio, 78, was stricken during dinner Saturday night. Doctors said he vomited blood and appeared to be experiencing pulmonary problems, according to the paper.

He was advised by doctors to halt his tour of Italy, which he is visiting as a goodwill ambassador for the National Italian-American Federation and AT&T.;

DiMaggio’s parents emigrated from Isola Delle Femmine, a village in Sicily, at the turn of the century and settled in Martinez, Calif., where he was born.

The village of 5,200 people had been preparing for a week to welcome DiMaggio and American and Italian flags were strung from buildings.
