PREP ROUNDUP : Gross’ Hit in 11th Inning Gets El Modena Past Canyon, 5-4

Adam Gross singled home Jeff Volz from third with no outs in the 11th inning to give El Modena a 5-4 victory over first-place Canyon in a Century League baseball game Monday at El Modena.

Gabe Valencia had three hits, including a home run, and Jeremy May pitched three shutout innings, striking out five, to earn the victory for the Vanguards (5-14, 3-6 in league).

Royce Valent hit a two-out single in the top of the seventh to drive in the tying run for Canyon (12-7, 6-3).

In other Century League games:

Foothill 7, Santa Ana Valley 5--David Trentine hit a three-run home run in the top of the seventh to erase a one-run deficit for visiting Foothill. Jason Vlcek had a double, a home run and three runs scored and Trentine had four RBIs for the Knights (9-10, 4-5). Santa Ana Valley is 8-11, 4-5.

Orange 9, Villa Park 6--Saul Archuleta had four hits, two RBIs and two runs scored and Eric Mendoza had three hits, an RBI and a run scored for the visiting Panthers (9-10, 5-4). Orange trailed, 6-5, then rallied for four runs in the seventh to take the lead. Villa Park is 10-9, 5-4.

In the Garden Grove League:

Garden Grove 4, Los Amigos 3--Joe Snavely hit a home run for host Garden Grove.

In Garden Grove League softball:

Garden Grove 1, Rancho Alamitos 0--Stephanie Mareina walked and scored when Rancho Alamitos (8-7, 5-3) made two errors on a pick-off attempt. Duffy White (11-6) pitched five innings for the victory for Garden Grove (15-7, 6-2).

Kennedy 4, Los Amigos 0--Lisa Pitt pitched a no-hitter, her second this season, with 12 strikeouts and two walks for host Kennedy (17-2, 7-1). Pitt also had two hits and two stolen bases and Laurie Fritz homered for the Fighting Irish.

La Quinta 5, Santiago 0--Julie Flindt had two hits, including a bases-loaded triple in the first, for host La Quinta (5-12, 3-5). Teresa Pinkerton pitched a four-hitter with six strikeouts for the Aztecs. Santiago is 5-10, 3-5.

Pacifica 7, Bolsa Grande 1--Valarie Downen had three hits, stole three bases, and scored two runs and Susan Denny had a three-run double in the first inning for host Pacifica (13-6, 7-1). Richelle Brigg had two hits and stole two bases for Pacifica.

In the Garden Grove League:

Pacifica 222, Garden Grove 244--Jeremy Marquez shot a six-over 40 at Old Ranch for Pacifica (8-2, 4-0).

In the Sea View League:

Newport Harbor 207, University 209--Medalist Bret Skinner shot an even-par 36 at Rancho San Joaquin for University (4-6 in league). Bill McKibbin shot a three-over 39 for Newport Harbor.

In the Sunset League individual championships:

Farley wins title--Jeff Farley of Huntington Beach made par on the second playoff hole to beat Marina’s Brian Rea for the individual title at the Orange Course at Green River Golf Course. Both had shot 73-78 to tie at 151 after 36 holes.
