ALR Joining Makers of Energy-Wise Computers

IRVINE — Advanced Logic Research Inc. has joined the ranks of computer manufacturers readying “green” machines that cut energy use by shutting down when not in use.
About 20 manufacturers, including AST Research, Apple, IBM and Texas Instruments, have already unveiled plans for computers that meet federal energy efficiency guidelines. ALR, based in Irvine, said it will introduce two “green” PC lines in June.
Computers now account for 5% of the nation’s commercial electricity use, and the amount is expected to hit 10% by 2000. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s “Energy Star” guidelines are supposed to cut annual electric consumption by 25 billion kilowatt-hours by 2000.
U.S. standards are voluntary, but later this year the federal government will start purchasing only computers that meet the EPA’s Energy Star standards.
During fiscal 1994, the federal government will spend $26 billion on information technology, according to Government Computer News, a publication based in Silver Spring, Md. The federal government has 1.75 million personal computers in use, according to the publication.
Computer manufacturers will “be releasing a slew of energy-efficient products in the next few months,” said Brian Johnson, manager of the EPA’s energy efficiency program.
