LOS ANGELES : Olmos Rejected in Bid to Carry Concealed Firearm

The Los Angeles Police Commission on Tuesday denied a request by Edward James Olmos to carry a concealed weapon, despite the actor’s contention that his life may be in jeopardy.

Olmos, who starred in the gang film “American Me,” had sought the permit to carry a hidden firearm after police said two technical advisers to the movie were shot to death last year.

Richard M. Dameron, the commission’s acting commanding officer, said that Olmos told police “he has received information that threats have been made against him and his family.” But Dameron said the actor failed to show that his “life or personal safety is in serious and immediate danger.”

Commission members declined to reveal why they voted unanimously against the petition, but sources said it was because of unrelated legal action filed against the LAPD over its longstanding policy of not issuing permits.

Olmos did not attend the hearing.
