Space shuttle Columbia’s payload commander Jerry Ross and German astronaut Ulrich Walter took turns breathing hard into a long pipe connected to medical equipment in an experiment to shed light on how human lungs function in weightlessness. On the second day of the German-sponsored laboratory mission, the pair alternately sat still for the test or peddled a bicycle ergometer. In another experiment, German astronaut Hans Schlegel put some tiny mushrooms into a gravity-creating centrifuge. The rest were left exposed to weightlessness so the two groups can be compared after the nine-day flight.
