NHL ROUNDUP : Selanne’s Overtime Goal Keeps Winnipeg Alive

From Associated Press

Teemu Selanne scored a fluke goal at 6:18 of overtime to give the Winnipeg Jets a 4-3 decision Tuesday night at Vancouver and extend the Smythe Division NHL semifinal to a sixth game.

Selanne’s pass from near the end boards hit the skate of backchecking Vancouver forward Tim Hunter and deflected past stunned goalie Kirk McLean.

“Those are the kind of goals that are scored in the playoffs,” said Jet Coach John Paddock. “But it’s not unusual when you go to the net.

“Our best players played their best game of the series as a group. Teemu was good.”

Vancouver’s lead in the best-of-seven series is 3-2, and the sixth game will be Thursday in Winnipeg. A seventh, if needed, would be in Vancouver on Saturday.

Selanne, who tied for the league lead with 76 goals, has four in his last three playoff games after being held scoreless in the first two games of the series.

Winnipeg’s Darrin Shannon sent the game into overtime when he scored his second goal of the night midway through the third period. Shannon swept a quick shot into the net after Greg Adams of the Canucks was tripped in the Vancouver zone with no penalty call, drawing the ire of the sellout crowd.

Toronto 5, Detroit 4--Mike Foligno’s goal at 2:05 of overtime lifted the Maple Leafs to the victory at Detroit, giving them a 3-2 lead in the Norris Division semifinal series.

The Maple Leafs, who trailed, 4-1, won their third in a row and had the only two shots on goal during the extra period.

Thirty seconds into the overtime, a shot by Toronto’s Dave Andreychuk hit the right post.

Wendel Clark, who tied it, 4-4, in the third period, set up the winning goal by digging the puck out from a scramble along the left boards. He passed it to Foligno, who fired a shot through a maze of bodies from between the circles.

“I knew (Wendel) would get me the puck, so I just headed for the slot,” Foligno said. “He got it to me, and I just let it go.”
