America West Initiates Fare Cuts: America West Airlines, firing the first shot in what could be a new price war, cut discount fares by as much as 30% for summer travel through Sept. 7. The non-refundable fares must be purchased 14 days before departure and require a Saturday night stay-over. Tickets must be purchased by May 19. The lowest fares are available for travel on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. On those days, the fare for a Los Angeles-New York round trip is $378, a 29% reduction from the standard discount price.
