NOTEBOOK / GARY KLEIN : Azusa Pacific Stakes Claim to Share of Golden League Title

The Azusa Pacific baseball team has assured itself of a share of a fourth consecutive Golden State Athletic Conference championship.

The Cougars, under Coach Tony Barbone, entered the week 27-6-1, 13-3 in the GSAC and ranked fifth in the National Assn. of Intercollegiate Athletics. Azusa Pacific concludes its regular season with doubleheaders against Westmont and Cal Baptist. An Azusa Pacific victory, or loss by Southern California College, would give the Cougars the title outright.

Senior third baseman Pedro Carranza is batting .360 for Azusa Pacific, which is likely to host a four-team District 3 tournament May 13-15.

Senior outfielder Steve Allyn is batting .357. Pitcher John Brookman is 6-1 with a 4.08 earned-run average. Bryan Kochner is 5-0 with a 2.74 ERA.

The Azusa Pacific women’s softball team will attempt to win its third consecutive District 3 championship when the Cougars travel to Southern California College for a playoff tournament May 7-9.

Azusa Pacific (37-10) has established a school record for victories in a season, breaking the mark of 36 set in 1991.

The Cougars, under Coach Doug Barnett, are led by sophomore pitcher Robyn Cano, who is 16-2. Liz Campbell is batting .453 and Cari De Bie is batting .452.

The Cal Poly Pomona baseball team fell from first to third place in the California Collegiate Athletic Assn. after losing two of three games against UC Riverside.

Pomona, which entered the week 24-20, is 12-10 in the CCAA. Riverside is 11-9 in conference. Both teams trail Cal Poly San Luis Obispo by a game.

Grant Stephens has stolen 20 bases for Pomona and has 48 in his career, four shy of the school record set by Kevin Thornhill in 1974-75.

Pomona plays three CCAA games against Cal State Los Angeles (14-26, 6-14 in the CCAA) this weekend.

The Cal Poly Pomona women’s basketball team has signed a fourth recruit to a national letter of intent.

Michaela Ross, a 5-9 swing player, averaged 22.7 points and 7.6 rebounds last season for Newport Harbor High.

Point guard Lori Talley and twin sisters Tiffany and Taffany Maxwell, both guards, have also signed with the Broncos.

Two-time defending Cal Poly Pomona will be the host school for the Division II women’s tennis championships May 7-13 at the Industry Hills Sheraton Resort.

Pomona entered the week 12-7 and 6-2 in the California Collegiate Athletic Assn. Teams and individuals that will participate in the event will be announced Sunday.

Pomona’s men’s team, which entered the week 12-6 and 5-3 in the CCAA, is still in the running for its first berth in the Division II championships that will be played May 14 in Edmund, Okla.

Matt Campbell and Asha Jayasinghe of Arcadia High signed national letters of intent last week with the Naval Academy and USC, respectively.

The 6-foot-7 Campbell was a Times’ All San Gabriel Valley selection in basketball.

Jayasinghe ran the third-fastest 400 in the nation this year (55.63) a few weeks ago at the Arcadia Invitational. She also runs the 200 and participates in the 1,600 relay.

The Challengers Angling Club is seeking fisherman interested in joining the organization, which was established in 1953.

The club sponsors fishing trips once a month from February through October, and meets on the fourth Wednesday of each month for dinner and a program at Covina Bowl in Covina.

The Arcadia National Little League is seeking former players, coaches and officials for its 40th anniversary celebration that will take place Saturday at the National Guard armory in Arcadia.

The league was founded in 1953 and has served as a training ground for several major league players, including Todd Worrell of the Dodgers.

High school soccer players are eligible to apply for college scholarships worth $1,000 each that will be presented by the Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks and the Ford Motor Co.

The 1993 Senior Olympics, featuring competition for men and women in 19 events, will be staged June 5-19 in Pasadena.

Participants 50 and older are eligible to compete in track and field, race walking and walking, swimming, golf, tennis, cycling, softball, lawn bowling, bowling, basketball and ice skating. Gold, silver and bronze medals will be awarded in each age division, and winners will qualify for the state championships that will be contested in San Diego in September.

The Pasadena Games also will include race-walking and tennis for handicapped athletes, and non-athletic competitions in chess, bridge, and ballroom dancing.
