Marshall might be the class of City Section 3-A Division volleyball this season, but Eagle Rock is also having an excellent season.

The Eagles, under fourth-year Coach Bill Whiting, entered the week 7-2 in the Northwest League. Eagle Rock was in position to clinch its second consecutive league championship when the Eagles played Wilson on Wednesday. Results were not available at press time.

Eagle Rock is led by senior hitters Thomas Puzio and Raymond Arcangel.

Marshall is 12-0 and 9-0 in the Northeastern League.

City playoffs begin Tuesday.

The Crescenta Valley boys’ volleyball team entered the week 11-2 and 4-1 in the Pacific League after victories over Arcadia and Hoover.

The Falcons, under Coach John Nelson, were led by Allan Pratt, who had 19 kills against Arcadia and 13 against Hoover.

All-star basketball games between high school seniors from the Glendale and Burbank areas will be played Friday night at Glendale College.

Scott Kemple of Verdugo Hills will coach the Glendale boys’ team, which includes: Chad Reese and Joe Khouzam (Hoover); Eddie Powell and Angelo De Los Reyes (Verdugo Hills); Dave Sofro, Hai Tran and Paul Chin (Glendale); David Craig and Jaason Pruett (St. Francis); Peter Bishop, Caleb Granger and Daniel Ostersehlte (Ribet Academy); Brendan Cowsill and Glenn Granz (Crescenta Valley); Eric Danneker and Brendan Crane (La Canada); Chirag Desai (Glendale Academy) and Brian Goldberg (Marshall).

Mary Lou Prohaska of Flintridge Scared Heart will coach the Glendale girls’ team, which includes: Melissa Lord and Gloria Nunez (La Canada); Nancy Evans and LaTonya Green (Hoover); Nada Kawar and Keri Petersen (Crescenta Valley); Monika Nagy (Glendale); Maria Fulay (Marshall); Melanie Slocum (Flintridge Prep), and Denise Gutierrez, Erin McGoldrick, Kristen O’Grady and Michelle Turner (Flintridge Sacred Heart.).

The girls’ game begins at 6:30 p.m., with the boys’ game to follow.

COMMUNITY COLLEGES

The Glendale College baseball team entered the week 16-17 and 11-14 in the Western State Conference after a 15-12 loss to Santa Monica.

The Vaqueros did provide Coach Steve Coots with his 300th victory when they defeated College of the Canyons, 10-9, on April 22.

Coots is 300-248-2 in 16 seasons at Glendale.

The Vaqueros play a WSC game today at Oxnard. Glendale plays host to Moorpark on Saturday, then travels to Santa Barbara on Tuesday.

Nine women and six men from Glendale College will compete in the Western State Conference track and field championships Saturday at College of the Canyons.

All of the athletes qualified last week at the WSC prelims at Canyons.

America Rivas and Tina Santana will compete in the 1,500 meters and 5,000. Other women qualifiers include: Suzanne Szarka and Margarita Renteria (800 and 1,500); Nina Monette (200 and 400); Makela Theriault (high jump); Nancy McCaul (400), and Allison Oliver and Nancy Harris (javelin).

Robert Nelson was the Vaqueros’ top men’s qualifier, winning the 10,000 at the prelims. Other Glendale qualifiers include: Luis Jacobo (10,000), Erwin Khachikian and Aaron Holding (1,500), Carlos Guerra (javelin) and Brandon Lopez (shotput).

COLLEGES

Four Occidental College athletes have qualified for the NCAA Division II track and field championships May 26-29 at Baldwin-Wallace College in Ohio.

Men’s qualifiers include Konstantine Kinderich, who will compete in the 1,500 meters, Gunnar Miller (pole vault) and Jose Garcia (10,000).

Becky Kopchick is the Tigers’ lone women’s qualifier. She will compete in the 3,000 and 5,000.

The Occidental baseball team entered the week 14-15-2 and 8-10 in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference after being swept by Claremont last weekend.

Cal Lutheran leads the SCIAC with a 16-2 record. Occidental is sixth among eight teams.

Senior catcher Bob Kennedy is batting .398 for the Tigers. Junior outfielder Stewart Kramer is tied for the conference lead with eight home runs and is second in runs batted in with 32.

Occidental plays Cal Lutheran in a three-game series this weekend.

PREP ATHLETE OF WEEK

Garrett Lee, Crescenta Valley--Lee, a junior right-hander, pitched a no-hitter to help the Falcons defeat Glendale, 4-0, and end a six-game losing streak.

Lee had two strikeouts and issued four walks as Crescenta Valley improved to 4-5 in the Pacific League.

COLLEGE ATHLETE OF WEEK

Jose Robles, Glendale--Robles, a sophomore infielder, hit a three-run home run for the Vaqueros during their 15-12 loss to Santa Monica.

Robles, a Hoover High graduate, also walked and scored a run.

MISCELLANY

Will Moravec and Kurt Kredel of La Canada won the men’s open doubles championship at the Ojai tennis tournament last weekend. Moravec and Kredel defeated Kevin Forbes of Newport Beach and John Washer of Costa Mesa, 7-5, 6-1, in the final. . . . Cal State Fullerton basketball Coach Brad Holland, a former Southern Section player of the year at Crescenta Valley, was given a one-year contract extension after leading the Titans to a 15-12 record.

A golf tournament sponsored by the Chambers of Commerce in La Canada-Flintridge, Montrose-Verdugo City and Crescenta Valley will be played May 24 at the La Canada-Flintridge Country Club. The entry fee is $150. Information: (818) 790-4289.

Crescenta Valley: 13-1; Sophomore Danielle Robertshaw has led the Falcons to a 3-0 start in the Pacific League and an eventual showdown with Hoover. 3. Glendale: 8-4-1; The Dynamiters hopes for a Pacific League title probably vanished with losses against Arcadia and Hoover, but they remain in the race for the playoffs. 4. La Canada: 8-4; The Spartans improved to 3-0 in the Rio Hondo League with a 1-0, 13-inning victory over Temple City. Lauren Burns drove in the game-winning run. 5.
