National Merit Scholars Named

Ten South Bay students were named National Merit Scholars this week, bringing the total number of local honorees so far to 17.
The students, who all will receive $2,000 scholarships, included six who attend Palos Verdes Peninsula High School in Rolling Hills Estates. They are: Soojung Lee, Thomas P. Treynor, Caryn C. Kato, Julianne E. Ludwig, Sara M. Stager and David W. Chiang.
Also among the new honorees were three students in the Torrance Unified School District. They were Hyung J. Kim of West High School, Guy S. Ortoland of Torrance High School and Travis S. Park of South High School.
Nathaniel A. Jacobs, a Gardena resident who attends Crenshaw High School in Los Angeles, also won a scholarship.
The National Merit Scholarship Corp. has been releasing the names of scholarship winners since March. More than 1 million students in thousands of high schools nationwide entered the contest by taking a preparatory college placement exam.
