No sooner did the New York Islanders advance to the Patrick Division finals than they found out they will be without their best player for the remainder of the playoffs.

“In a moment that I should be very happy, it was a disgraceful and distasteful thing that happened to our club,” Islander Coach Al Arbour said.

Arbour spoke after learning that Pierre Turgeon suffered a separated shoulder and concussion during Wednesday night’s 5-3 victory over the Washington Capitals at Uniondale, N.Y., in Game 6 of a Patrick Division semifinal series.

Turgeon, who scored 58 goals during the regular season and four during the series against the Capitals, was injured after scoring the Islanders’ fifth goal late in the game when Washington’s Dale Hunter rammed him from behind. Turgeon had to be helped off the ice and later wore his right shoulder in a sling.

Hunter defended the hit.

“I didn’t even see him score a goal,” he said. “I was just finishing my check. It was a clean check.”

Montreal 6, Quebec 2--Paul DiPietro, playing in only his third playoff game, scored three goals and had an assist at Montreal as the Canadiens advanced to the Adams Division final.

DiPietro, moved into the lineup in place of the injured Stephan Lebeau, helped Montreal win its fourth consecutive game.
