HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : Superb Suppan Stymies Harvard With No-Hitter

Jeff Suppan’s answer is that it’s best to be lucky and good.

The Crespi High right-hander pitched the second no-hitter of his high school career Wednesday, beating Harvard-Westlake, 6-0, in a Mission League game at Valley College.

“I think it was more luck this time,” said Suppan, comparing his no-hitter to one he threw as a freshman against Torrance. “I don’t know if I was on with my curveball, but I was lucky.”

Suppan (7-1), who threw 96 pitches, struck out 12 and walked one. He extended his scoreless innings streak to 32. In 61 innings this season, Suppan has 85 strikeouts and seven walks.

“I don’t know if (I’m pitching my best),” said Suppan, a senior who has signed to play at UCLA, “but it’s going pretty well.”

The no-hitter was the first by a Crespi pitcher since Suppan’s 1990 effort.

At the plate, Suppan was two for three with a double and two runs batted in. Javier Avila was three for three with two runs and Keith Evans was two for three.

In other baseball games:

Notre Dame 6, St. Bernard 5--Francisco Dongo’s one-out single with the bases loaded in the seventh inning drove in Glen Carson for the winning run in a Mission League game at Notre Dame (15-4, 7-2).

Carson was hit by a pitch with one out in the inning and advanced to third on Chris Garza’s double. Dave Supple was intentionally walked to load the bases, setting up Dongo’s game-winning hit.

Chris Leveque (7-1) earned the win and had seven strikeouts but surrendered 10 hits, including three home runs. Ryan Stromsborg went two for four and scored a run and Joey Orlando hit a two-run home run.

Loyola 5, Alemany 0--Robby Green pitched a complete game, striking out 11, to lead the host Cubs to a Mission League victory. Chris Tashima had two hits for Alemany (12-9, 6-3), which has lost three in a row.

Hart 5, Burroughs 1--Arron Dean’s run-scoring double and Gary Stephenson’s RBI single highlighted a three-run fourth inning that broke a 1-1 tie and allowed Hart (15-5, 5-1) to move one-half game ahead of Burroughs (11-9, 5-2) in the Foothill League.

Karl Castro was two for three with an RBI for Burroughs, which had a seven-game winning streak snapped.

Newbury Park 8, Channel Islands 2--Ray Clinton (6-1) had 11 strikeouts and pitched a three-hitter in a Marmonte League game at Newbury Park (13-7, 8-1). Panther shortstop David Lamb went three for four with one RBI and catcher Jeff Bennett had two hits and two RBIs. Victor Bernal (2-3) took the loss for Channel Islands (8-10, 3-6).

Royal 11, Westlake 4--The Highlanders had only four hits but benefited from 12 walks--six in a six-run first inning. Gene Strojek and Jack Kocur had two-run doubles and Kocur added a solo home run.

Agoura 5, Camarillo 3--Designated hitter Josh Markiewicz went two for three with three RBIs and Jason Warren (2-5) allowed four hits and one earned run to give host Agoura (4-14, 1-7) its first Marmonte League victory. The Chargers scored three runs in the sixth inning for the winning margin. Joe Smith earned his first save.

St. Francis 8, Bosco Tech 4--The Golden Knights won their fourth consecutive game after starting the season 1-11. Mike Jaramillo, Corby Foster and Mat DeCristo each had two hits for St. Francis (5-11, 4-3) in a Del Rey League game at Bosco Tech.

Sophomore right-hander Joe Baldino allowed two runs over six innings to pick up the victory.

Serra 8, Bell-Jeff 4--The Guards (5-12, 0-5) committed seven errors, which led to five unearned runs in a Camino Real League game at Serra. Alex Duque (1-1) took the loss. Guard first baseman Will Barnett was one for three with two RBIs.

Chaminade 8, Bishop Montgomery 5--Four hits and two errors helped the Eagles score five runs with two out in the top of the seventh to overcome a 5-3 deficit in a Mission League game. Jason Giovannettone and Brian Powers delivered run-scoring doubles in the inning. Powers, Casey Cote and Joel Orme each had two hits for Chaminade. Pitcher Gabe Crecion (2-4) allowed two earned runs.

Montclair Prep 13, Crossroads 1--Darrell Dent had three hits, leading a group of seven Mounties with multiple hits in a nonleague game at Crossroads. Justin Sampley (6-0) allowed one run in five innings to pick up the victory for Montclair Prep (16-3-1).

SOFTBALL

Sylmar 3, Birmingham 0--In what might have been a preview of a Valley Pac-8 championship game between these teams in two weeks, Sylmar (15-4, 7-0) took sole possession of first place against the Braves (8-4, 6-1) behind the two-hit pitching of Nikki Wright.

Wright (12-4) threw only 69 pitches, struck out five and allowed only one ball hit out of the infield.

The Spartans led, 1-0, in the sixth and got two insurance runs when Traci Hanna’s single to center field drove in Sonia Garcia. Hanna also scored on the play when the ball got past Birmingham’s center fielder for a three-base error. Sylmar’s victory was its 46th in a row in the conference.

Poly 14, North Hollywood 8--Rachel Fogelhut of North Hollywood had a home run and a double but it was not enough in an East Valley League game at Poly. Leticia Palayo was three for three for Poly (5-9, 2-5).

Grant 8, Monroe 6--Catcher Anna Parade had four RBIs and Michele Guadagno earned the victory in relief for the Lancers (8-4, 5-2) in a Mid-Valley League game at Grant.

Michelle Ennis had a double and a triple for Monroe (8-4, 4-3).

Louisville 2, Notre Dame 1--Lindsey Harris pitched a complete game and drove in both runs with a triple in the sixth inning of a Mission League game at Louisville.

BOYS’ TRACK

Nordhoff 117, Santa Paula 19, Nordhoff 115, Santa Clara 21--Adam Blundell and Archie Jackson produced the top performances for the Rangers in the Frontier League meet at Nordhoff.

Blundell won the 100 meters in 11.2 seconds and the long jump at 20 feet 11 1/2 inches, and Jackson was victorious in the 220-yard dash (23.5) and the triple jump (43-0 1/2).

The win clinched the league title for the Rangers (7-0, 4-0).

GIRLS’ TRACK

Nordhoff 112, Santa Paula 7; Nordhoff 93, Santa Clara 21--Rebecca Seebirt and Monica Berlin had the top marks for the Rangers in the Tri-Valley League meet at Nordhoff.

Seebirt went 32-7 in the triple jump and Berlin timed 64.9 in the 440 for Nordhoff (6-1, 4-0), which clinched the league title with the victory.

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

Valley Alternative d. Downtown Business, 11-15, 15-12, 15-13, 15-4--James Henenover had 16 kills to lead Valley Alternative in the championship match of the Magnet League tournament. It is the first championship in three years for any boys’ team at the school. Peter Leptuch added nine aces for Valley Alternative (9-2).

Village Christian d. Glendale Academy, 15-9, 15-4, 15-4--Greg Walgenbach led the Crusaders with 18 kills in an Alpha League match at Glendale Academy (7-3, 4-2). Chad Hanson added 10 kills and five aces for Village Christian (12-1, 5-0), which leads the league by 1 1/2 matches.

Hart d. Littlerock, 15-3, 15-1, 15-1--Chad Strickland had nine kills and 12 aces to lead the Indians (13-0, 11-0) to a Golden League victory.

GOLF

Alemany 204, Bishop Montgomery 241--Brothers Matt and Scott Heyn shot three-over par 39s to lead the Indians (13-1, 8-1) in a Mission League match at Los Verdes Country Club. Jason Rosenfelt, who shot a 40, eagled the 490-yard, par-five first hole.

The Indians will face undefeated Loyola in a key league match Monday.
