Countywide : Special Olympics Expects 300 Entrants
About 300 athletes from around Ventura County are expected to participate in the 25th annual Ventura County Special Olympics on Saturday, officials said.
Opening ceremonies will begin at 9 a.m. at Ventura High School’s Larrabee Stadium.
More than 30 events will be featured, including the 30-meter slalom manual wheelchair race, the 800-meter run and the 25-meter dash.
“Special Olympics provides sports-training opportunities to mentally retarded individuals, and the purpose is enhancing their self-esteem,” said Renee Gomez, recreation coordinator for the city of Ventura, which co-sponsors the event. “I’m so amazed and so inspired by the athletes.”
Admission is free. For more information, call 658-4745.
