Santa Clarita / Antelope Valley : Factory Outlet Complex OKd Near Gorman
Los Angeles County Supervisors on Tuesday gave final approval to a giant factory outlet complex near rural Gorman, despite repeated objections from environmentalists who said they might sue to block the project.
The project, near the junction of the Golden State Freeway and California 138, will include a 95-store shopping mall, an 80-room motel, three restaurants, two gas stations and a convenience market.
Supervisors gave preliminary approval to the development in February, subject to a list of minor changes that included redesigning light fixtures so they do not point skyward and installing fire sprinklers.
Supporters of the $30-million project have said it is expected to generate $1.8 million in sales tax revenues every year and create 900 full- and part-time jobs.
Sierra Club representatives repeated their concerns Tuesday that the complex will bring the traffic and pollution of urban Los Angeles to the scenic area now used mostly for cattle grazing.
Only one supervisor, Ed Edelman, agreed. Edelman was the lone dissenter in the 3-1 vote.
