Both coaches called it a street fight because their teams were aggressive at the plate. But timely fielding and Rick Crosby’s pitching were enough for Santa Ana Valley to overpower Villa Park, 8-0, in a Century League game Tuesday at Santa Ana.
The Falcons (11-11, 7-5 in league) got an early lead on Carlos Valdez’s run-scoring single in the first inning.
Santa Ana Valley scored four more in the third on Frank Castro’s three-run home run, his first of the year, and German Nunez’s RBI single.
In the fourth, Martin Ortega drew a walk and scored on Castro’s sacrifice fly to make it 6-0.
The Spartans (11-11, 6-6) threatened in each of the first four innings but had runners thrown out at the plate three times. In addition, they stranded seven runners.
Santa Ana Valley scored again in the sixth on an RBI single by Valdez, who scored when Spartan catcher Jeff Halbert dropped the throw from left fielder Kayvan Pejouhian on Crosby’s single.
