Glendale : Free Oil Waste Collection
Glendale fire officials are making free house calls to pick up used oil products for recycling.
Residents wishing to dispose of the liquid should contact the Fire Department’s hazardous materials division to set up an appointment, said Vasken Demirjian, the division’s supervisor. The Curbside Collection Program is part of a $75,000 grant the department received from the state’s Integrated Waste Management Board, he said.
“Every Thursday we will have a representative from the Glendale Fire Department go collect waste oil from people that call us,” he said.
Since its inception two weeks ago, fire officials have picked up 200 gallons from 40 residents. The limit is five gallons of petroleum-based liquids per week.
The fluid is first taken to the city’s environmental management center before being transported to the Evergreen Environmental Services recycling plant in Carson. Evergreen does not pay compensation for the used oil, considered hazardous because it is flammable, Demirjian said.
