SANTA MONICA : Judge Refuses to Block High School Sex Survey
A Santa Monica Superior Court judge Friday denied a request by a group of parents to issue a temporary restraining order that would have blocked the RAND Corp. from seeking responses from Santa Monica High School students to an explicit sex survey.
The survey is scheduled to be given Tuesday to students whose parents have submitted written consent.
Lawyers representing some of the parents argued that information mailed along with the consent form inadequately communicated the sexually graphic nature of questions contained in the survey. But Superior Court Judge David Perez said the information was “sufficient,” as well as clear on how parents could get more data if they needed it.
The survey, a joint project between RAND and UCLA, is aimed at evaluating the effectiveness of the high school’s health program, which last spring became the first in Los Angeles County to distribute condoms without parental consent. It questions students on such things as how often they have sex and whether their partners are of the same sex.
