* * * Posies, “Frosting on the Beater,” Geffen. Ironically, “Frosting” is the Posies’ least sugary-sounding effort to date. The pun-a-second power-pop is still firmly in place, but the production and playing pack more thrashy rock punch. If Squeeze meets Big Star meets the Who meets Robyn Hitchcock meets (yes) the Beatles in an only slightly grungy Seattle drizzle sounds like your bag, this is your sweet ‘n’ sour layer cake.

New albums are rated on a scale of one star (poor), two stars (fair), three stars (good) and four stars (excellent).
