May is Asian Pacific American Heritage Month in Los Angeles, and special events and programs to promote greater understanding and appreciation of the Asian Pacific American experience will take place throughout the city.

“There’s dynamic change going on within the Asian Pacific American community and this year’s theme--’History, Harmony and Hope: Challenges for the Future’--embraces all of that, our history and our future,” said Gina Kwon, a member of the mayor’s committee for the annual celebration.

On Thursday, the Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film and Video Festival opens at the Japan America Theater, 244 S. San Pedro St., with a 7:30 p.m. screening of “From Hollywood to Hanoi,” which chronicles a woman’s return to her homeland after more than 20 years in the U.S.
