DOWNTOWN : $80,000 Awarded to Promote Arts

Sixteen artists, organizations and programs that help youths were awarded a total of $80,000 in the second round of the Los Angeles Arts Recovery Fund, a grant program started after last year’s riots.

The grants of $4,558 to $5,000 were presented to such groups and agencies as McKinley Avenue School in South-Central, for its mural and art workshops, and such individuals as Sally Colmaire, for a mural development project in South-Central.

Other awardees included:

* Crystal Stairs, for its performing and studio arts program at Nickerson Gardens;

* Destination theater program in Pico-Union;

* Dorothy Taylor’s Network, a craft and quilt-making program in West Adams;

* Heart of L.A. Youth’s art instruction in Mid-Wilshire;

* Lula Washington Contemporary Dance Theatre for a dance program in West Adams;

* L.A. Youth, for journalism, photography and graphics projects citywide.

The Arts Recovery Fund was created after the riots to help cultural and artistic projects that contribute to recovery and encourage artistic endeavors. With this second round of awards, the fund has provided about $560,000 to projects citywide.
