Alain Prost of France won his fifth consecutive pole, breaking the qualifying record for the Spanish Grand Prix at Barcelona.
The three-time world champion, in a Williams-Renault, toured the 2.95-mile Circuit of Catalunya course in 1 minute 17.809 seconds, an average of 136.5 m.p.h.
Prost’s teammate, Damon Hill, was timed in 1:18.346 for second place, and Ayrton Senna of Brazil was third in 1:19.722.
