GLENDALE : Student Parking Plan May Be Delayed

Share

An oversight by Glendale Community College administrators could stall a residential permit parking plan slated to begin this fall near the campus, officials said.

The measure, made a city ordinance last month during a transportation and parking commission meeting, restricts student parking on residential streets near the college and only allows residents with permits to park there.

City and college officials had agreed to implement the plan Aug. 24, the first day of the fall semester. But college officials changed their minds when they realized that the plan could upset newly enrolled students and cause them to go to another college.

In the fall, students who want to park on campus or across the street in city-owned lots will have to pay $40 for a permit. Another choice is to pay a meter fee at 50 cents an hour--up 10 cents from this semester. Residents will have to pay $6 a year for the permit, which includes three guest parking passes, officials said.

On May 24, college officials are expected to ask parking commissioners to delay the plan until January--the scheduled completion date for a 750-space student parking structure. The new structure would increase the number of on- and off-campus parking spaces from 1,680 to 2,430.
