FOUNTAIN VALLEY : Rotary Club Raises $10,000 for DARE

Share

The Rotary Club of Fountain Valley has raised $10,000 for the city’s Drug Abuse Resistance Education program.

The funds will enable the program to continue for another year, officials said.

Police Capt. Rod Gillman said the city will not receive state grants to help fund the DARE program for the 1993-94 school year.

The donation “means a lot to the department,” Gillman said. “It will make it possible for us to carry on the DARE program for another year. It was a pleasant surprise for us that one group cared that much.”

The Rotary Club raised the money through its seventh annual benefit golf tournament May 7 at Mile Square Golf Course. The Los Angeles Rams co-sponsored the charity event, which attracted 125 golfers. About 150 people attended the dinner that followed.

The DARE program has been taught to fifth- and seventh-grade students in city schools for the past three years.

“We were thrilled,” said Mike Becker, the city’s sole DARE officer who teaches the program to students. “Obviously, it was generous of these people.”
