MISSION VIEJO : City Makes Library Panel a Foundation
A city committee that is looking for ways to pay for construction of a new library was converted into a nonprofit foundation by the City Council this week.
To help fund the newly formed Mission Viejo Library Foundation, the council agreed to grant $5,000 in seed money to the group.
Separating the group from the city will enable members to more aggressively seek grants from private sources to fund library construction, city officials said.
The grant from the city will allow the foundation to organize fund-raisers to draw resources from the community, officials said.
The city also put aside $50,000 in next year’s budget to finance preliminary architectural drawings, a move that will aid in attracting public grants.
Last month, the council vetoed a $491,000 package that included about $400,000 for more complete renderings of the proposed library building.
In a related vote, the council this week also decided to spend $9,975 for a survey to determine how much residents want a new library.
