PACOIMA : Permit Clears Way for Housing Project
The approval of a conditional-use permit Friday for a community center in a Pacoima housing project clears the way for construction to begin next month.
John J. Parker, an associate zoning administrator, approved the request by the Housing Authority of Los Angeles to build a $674,000 center on Lehigh Avenue to replace the four-bedroom apartment that now serves as a center.
A spokeswoman for residents of the San Fernando Gardens Housing Development was the only person who spoke during the brief hearing at the Van Nuys Woman’s Club.
“I’m very happy and excited because it’s going to really help the residents,” said Luz Elena Tafolla, president of the development’s residents advisory council. “The community services center will serve residents better and we’re going to have more activities for the kids.”
The 5,330-square-foot building will be built on an empty lot inside the housing complex, where more than 2,000 residents live in 448 federally subsidized apartment units. The center will contain meeting and conference rooms and a child-care facility.
Tafolla said the center, expected to be completed by the end of this year, offers job-training programs, English classes, counseling and medical services.
