The thrill of victory. The agony of . . . victory?

Jeff Suppan had to force a smile Friday at Alemany High. The Crespi right-hander had, after all, defeated Alemany, 16-4, finishing off the school’s first perfect Mission League season and 14th win in a row.

But the game’s real drama hinged on Suppan’s scoreless-innings streak, which ended at 42 when he surrendered two runs in the fourth inning.

Suppan first said he wasn’t distressed about the streak snapping. It had begun April 3 and spanned parts of six starts and two relief appearances. Later, however, he admitted, “It’s always in the back of your mind, but we came out and did what we had to do--win.”

Crespi (24-2, 14-0 in league play), ranked second in the area by The Times, gave Suppan a comfortable cushion by scoring nine runs in the first two innings. Suppan, who has signed to pitch at UCLA, had allowed one hit and one walk through the first three innings, but sharp singles by Andy Dominique and Chris Tashima led off the fourth.

“He came in to some great hitters and he did what he was supposed to and they did what they were supposed to,” Crespi Coach Scott Muckey said.

They each moved up a base on a passed ball and scored on two groundouts. “Nobody was really thinking about (the streak) too much,” catcher Casey Snow said. “That’s better, instead of putting unnecessary pressure on ourselves.”

Suppan struggled again in the seventh, allowing two more runs on three hits and two wild pitches. He finished having allowed six hits and three earned runs. He walked one and struck out 10.

Suppan finished the regular season 9-1 with an 0.75 earned-run average. In 75 innings, he allowed 40 hits, struck out 103 and walked 10. Alemany (12-14, 6-8) lost its last eight league games after starting 6-0.
