ROUNDUP : Matadors Win 2 in Softball
Jennifer Richardson pitched a two-hit shutout Saturday to give Cal State Northridge a 1-0 softball victory and a Western Athletic Conference doubleheader sweep of Utah at Salt Lake City.
Northridge won the opener, 3-1, on a six-hitter by Kathy Blake.
The second-ranked Matadors (45-6-1, 20-2 in WAC play), who had already wrapped up the WAC championship, are expected to be named host team in one of eight regional playoffs when the NCAA announces its national tournament pairings today.
Richardson (7-0) struck out two and walked five. Beth Calcante had two of Northridge’s four hits and drove in the only run.
Calcante hit her 12th home run in the first game, giving her 25 in her career to tie for fifth on the all-time NCAA list. Blake (19-2) struck out six and walked one.
HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL
Buckley 13, Whitney 7--The Griffins scored six runs in the seventh to win a Delphic League playoff game at Brentwood High.
The victory puts Buckley (14-8, 6-5) in this week’s playoffs.
Montclair Prep 4, Hart 1--Four Mountie pitchers--Jason Sandler, Jeff Shapiro, Chris Ferebee and Darrell Dent--combined on a no-hitter in a nonleague game at Hart.
Darrell Dent hit a two-run homer for Montclair Prep (24-1).
