‘Happy Trails’ Raises $150,000

The Salvation Army’s “Happy Trails to You” benefit gala honoring Roy Rogers and Dale Evans on April 29 at the Universal Hilton netted $150,000. Proceeds will go to the new Hollywood Youth Shelter and Youth Center. (Groundbreaking is scheduled for July 15.) In addition, the Weingart Foundation has donated $2 million to the project.

Vital Options, a support group serving people ages 17 to 40 who have or have had cancer, netted more than $47,000 at its April 24 benefit gala at the Regent Beverly Wilshire. The event featured a roast of Harvey Korman by Carol Burnett, Vicki Lawrence, Tim Conway and others. Selma R. Schimmel is founder and executive director of Vital Options.

National Council of Jewish Women raised $24,000 at its April 25 “Fabulous Outdoor Flea Market” at the council’s center on Fairfax Avenue. Proceeds will benefit the council’s community service projects, including a children’s reading program at homeless shelters.

Cystic Fibrosis Foundation’s fourth annual “Evening With the California Winemasters” netted more than $200,000, a 30% increase over last year. About 600 guests at the May 1 benefit, sponsored by American Airlines, sampled wines from 21 California wineries and food prepared by chefs from the Ritz-Carlton, Four Seasons and La Costa hotels. Michael Mondavi was master of ceremonies.

Two charities, the Concern Foundation for Cancer Educational Research and Resources and Services Center, will receive the more than $518,000 raised Jan. 29 at the “Daily Variety Salutes Army Archerd” gala at the Beverly Hilton. Concern Foundation, in its 25th year, raises $1 million annually for cancer research. The Culver City-based center has provided programs and services for more than 48,000 children challenged by poverty, abuse or disabilities.
