Fund Drive Attracts $26,000 for Station

Saddleback College’s non-commercial radio station, KSBR-FM, recently raised $26,000 during its annual membership drive, about the same amount that was pledged last year.

“People are counting their pennies right now, so this was better than we expected,” station general manager Mark Schiffelbein said.

The jazz-format station will use the money raised during the weeklong drive, which ended May 8, to pay for operating expenses and equipment not covered by the college.

The station recently had to spend $15,000 on new microwave transmitting equipment required by the Federal Communications Commission and has hired an engineering firm to study the possibility of increasing the station’s broadcast power.

Hoping to raise another $4,000 to $5,000, the station on Sunday hosted a concert at the Dana Point Resort to celebrate its 14th birthday.

About 20 musicians, including jazz artists Tony Guerrero, Eric Marienthal, Mike Garson and Max Bennett, performed in a three-hour, outdoor jam session.
