All right, you wine snobs, with your “meaty cabs,” and “grassy” sauvignon blancs and your “toasty, oaky, buttery” chardonnays. KCET is letting us regular folks get in on the act, too, with its “Taste of California” wine-tasting Sunday in Pasadena.

Almost 30 “boutique” wineries will make their wares available for sampling during the afternoon event at the Ritz Carlton Huntington Hotel, 1401 S. Oak Knoll Ave. These are the little wineries scattered around the state that produce only about 10,000 cases a year or less.

And, according to Bruce F. Boring, vice president of sales and marketing for the California Wine Club, the winery owners will be there too.

“Dan Gainey is going to be there and he’ll be pouring your wine,” said Boring, who organized the event for KCET.

Now that name may not mean much to anyone who hasn’t trekked through the hills of the Santa Ynez Valley, but he’s the guy who owns Gainey Vineyards, near Solvang. The nice thing is that everyone will be willing to answer all your questions, Boring promises.

“If you’re a novice, you can come and get educated,” he said. “If you’re a connoisseur, you can try and compare” a lot of different wines from out-of-the-way places you’re not likely to visit very often.

“That’s what a wine-tasting is all about, finding out what you like,” Boring said. “It depends on your own personal taste buds. That’s the beautiful thing about it. You can’t be wrong. Everybody is a wine expert.”

There’s also going to be a silent auction for wine, accessories, and a couple of nifty trips to--where else?--wineries.
