Lewis’ Surgery to Limit His Training
World Boxing Council heavyweight champion Lennox Lewis underwent surgery on his right hand Thursday and will be unable to spar for up to two months, his doctor said.
Robert Hotchkiss, a surgeon at Hospital for Special Surgery in Manhattan, performed the operation. He repaired a torn tendon capsule in a knuckle on the little finger of the right hand and a split of the extensor tendon.
Hotchkiss said the operation went smoothly and recommended that Lewis not use the hand for six weeks to two months.
Lewis defended his title May 8 in Las Vegas with an unimpressive, 12-round decision over Tony Tucker.
