Tony Phillips had a two-run double and Travis Fryman had a two-run go-ahead single as the Detroit Tigers rallied for six runs in the eighth inning Thursday and defeated the Milwaukee Brewers, 6-2, at Milwaukee.

Milwaukee right-hander Bill Wegman (3-6) had given up only three hits entering the eighth and the Brewers had a 2-0 lead.

But Rob Deer, Scott Livingstone and pinch-hitter Lou Whitaker singled to start the eighth, loading the bases and finishing Wegman. Phillips then doubled to center off Doug Henry and Fryman dumped a two-run single into right.

Graeme Lloyd’s wild throw on Kirk Gibson’s bunt allowed Fryman to score and Chad Kreuter drove in the sixth run with a squeeze bunt.

Toronto 4, Boston 3--Joe Carter, third in the American League in runs batted in, drove in the winning run with a ninth-inning forceout at Boston.

Devon White started the ninth with a bunt single and went to second on Roberto Alomar’s sacrifice bunt. Paul Molitor, who had three hits, singled to right but White stopped at third.

Carter then lined the ball off the glove of pitcher Paul Quantrill (2-3). It ricocheted to second baseman Scott Fletcher, whose throw to second forced Molitor as White scored.

Seattle 7, Texas 4--Edgar Martinez’s two-run pinch-homer in the eighth inning keyed a six-run rally, sending the Mariners to the victory at Arlington, Tex.

Martinez hit the first pitch from reliever Jeff Bronkey to left center for his first homer, breaking a 2-2 tie. Martinez, the defending American League batting champion, had only three previous at-bats this season after missing the early part of the year because of a pulled hamstring.

Oakland 4, Kansas City 1--Dale Sveum’s two-run triple in the top of the 12th inning gave the Athletics the victory at Kansas City.

Edwin Nunez (1-2) pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings for the victory.
