RUNWAY TO REALITY : Wild and Crazy

The Look: Asian-inspired clothing--Mao jackets, slim silk pants and cheongsams--and outrageous hair.

How to Do It Big: English designer John Galliano became the talk of Paris when he showed eight versions of the slinky, skintight cheongsam--in silk satin or synthetic, satinized leather--at prices ranging from $819 to $1,269. The dresses, part of his spring collection, were dramatic on their own. But Galliano decided to get really crazy with outrageous, big hair designed by Julien d’Ys and exotic makeup by Stephane Marais.

The Galliano dresses can be ordered from Comme Des Fous in Los Angeles.

How to Do It on a Budget: There’s a new design duo in Los Angeles, Laura Boghner and Marjorie Latham, whose new line--Two Chicks--includes a black Chinese-style dress in stretchy, woven cotton-Lycra, lined with red brocade. The retail price is $140 and it’s sold exclusively at American Rag in Los Angeles. As for the hair--it’s possible to copy. Under the direction of Los Angeles hair and makeup artist Francisco, a stylist created the look with about $20 of curly Dynel hairpieces wrapped around a form made from a coat hanger stuffed with newspaper. The Jungle Shoes platforms are available for $85 at Tiffany in West Hollywood.
