NOTEBOOK / GARY KLEIN : Muir Races to Victory at Division I Track Meet

The Muir High boys’ track team won the Southern Section Division I track and field championship Saturday at Cerritos College.

Gerald Stamps won the 110-meter hurdles in 14.31 seconds, Kenny Haslip won the 300 hurdles in 37.63, and the Mustangs won the 400 relay in 41.70. Muir scored 51 points. Hart had 42, Nogales 35 and Diamond Bar 30.

Ten other San Gabriel Valley-area athletes also won individual championships.

In Division I, Kevin Devine of Nogales won the 100 in 10.69, Nathan Woods of Duarte won the 800 in 1 minute 53.92 seconds, and David Gehrke of Diamond Bar won the pole vault with a mark of 16 feet. Asha Jayasinghe of Arcadia won the girls’ 400 in 55.72 seconds.

In Division II, Rosalyn Grant of Ganesha won the long jump with a mark of 18-feet-4.

In Division III, Lamach Neal of Pomona won the 110 hurdles in 14.46. Warren Wolf of San Marino won the 3,200 in 9:32.37. Tamika Hart of Monrovia won the long jump with a mark of 18-9 3/4. Arnika Hughes of South Hills won the shotput with a mark of 36-7.

Heather Miller of Westridge won the Division IV 200 in 24.95 and the 400 in 57.49.

Steve Kobold and Oscar Mancisidor of the Cal Poly Pomona men’s tennis team won the Division II doubles championship last weekend at Edmund, Okla.

Kobald and Mancisidor defeated Mark Nielsen and Ricardo Reyes of Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, 6-4, 6-2, to win Pomona’s first championship in men’s tennis.

The Cal Poly Pomona baseball team lost to UC Davis and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and was eliminated from the NCAA Division II West regional last weekend at San Luis Obispo.

Pomona received an at-large berth in the regional after finishing second in the California Collegiate Athletic Assn. The Broncos took a 10-0 first-inning lead against Davis, but lost, 15-14. Pomona lost to San Luis Obispo, 10-8, and finished 28-27.

San Luis Obispo won the regional and advances to the Division II World Series at Montgomery, Ala.

The La Verne University softball team was eliminated from the Division III World Series at Decatur, Ill.

La Verne pitcher Stacy Mays set a Division III playoff record with 14 strikeouts in the Leopards’ 1-0 victory over Allegheny in their opener. But La Verne lost, 1-0, to Trenton State, and 3-0 to Rowan and finished 32-10.

Ann Meyers, recently inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame, will receive the 1993 Award of Distinction from the San Gabriel Valley YWCA at the Women of Achievement luncheon on June 4 at the Industry Hills Sheraton.

Volunteers and women of achievement from several professions will be honored at the event.

The 1993 Senior Olympics, featuring competition for men and women in 19 events, will be staged on June 5-19 in Pasadena.

Participants 50 and older are eligible to compete in track and field, race walking and walking, swimming, golf, tennis, cycling, softball, lawn bowling, bowling, basketball and ice skating. Gold, silver and bronze medals will be awarded in each age division. Age-group winners will qualify for the state championships that will be contested in San Diego in September.

The Pasadena Games also include race walking and tennis for handicapped athletes, and non-athletic competitions in chess, bridge and ballroom dancing.
