Fire Fees
I applaud the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors’ recent vote against a potential increase in property owners’ fire assessment fees (May 12). These fees could potentially have increased from approximately $36 each year to almost $200 per household, affecting homeowners in the unincorporated county and the 48 cities served by the County Fire Department.
There is no doubt that the County Fire Department provides a very necessary service, and that the department does an admirable job protecting the communities it serves. However, in these economic times, it is unfair to burden already financially strained homeowners. We must look to other measures to make up revenue shortfalls, starting with cutting bureaucratic costs wherever possible.
We support the supervisors and the County Fire Department in their efforts to ask for input from the county taxpayers. DIANA WOOD, President
