BASEBALL / DAILY REPORT : ANGELS : Rodgers: Gruber Will Give It All or Sit

Manager Buck Rodgers served notice that he will accept nothing less than 100% effort from Kelly Gruber, the free-agent third baseman who is eligible to join the Angels today after a 20-day rehabilitation assignment in the minor leagues.

Gruber, who underwent surgery to repair a torn rotator cuff in the off-season and is still experiencing soreness in his neck, told several reporters last week that he “may have to tone down his aggressiveness” because of the injury.

Said Rodgers of the former Toronto Blue Jay standout, who spent 60 days on the disabled list: “If his aggressiveness is too toned down, he’ll be sitting next to me.”

Gruber was batting .375 (three for eight) with one run and two runs batted in during three games for triple-A Vancouver.

Angel left-hander Mark Langston, who left Monday night’s game against the Seattle Mariners in the eighth inning because of a strained left hamstring, said he has experienced no pain in the leg since and will make his scheduled start against the Orioles tonight.
