Presidential Ball regained the lead near the top of the backstretch and drew off to a 2 1/2-length victory over No Way in the $500,000 New Jersey Classic for pacing 3-year-olds at the Meadowlands in East Rutherford, N.J.

Presidential Ball, who was 2-year-old pacer of the year, won in 1:51 4/5 with substitute driver Ron Waples. Jack Moiseyev had been scheduled to drive the son of Cam Fella, but the nation’s leading harness driver was injured in a spill at Freehold Raceway earlier in the day and hospitalized.

Presidential Ball, the 1-5 favorite, paid $2.40 and earned $250,000 for owner Antonio Chiaravalle of Canada. There was no place or show wagering. The victory was Presidential Ball’s third in four starts this year and increased his earnings to $1.16 million.
