Seven inmates at a Castaic jail suffered minor injuries in a brawl between black and Latino prisoners, Los Angeles County authorities said Monday.

The fight erupted about 4:20 p.m. Sunday in the North County Correctional Facility of the Peter Pitchess Honor Rancho when a black and a Latino inmate began arguing, Sheriff’s Deputy Gabe Ramirez said. Within minutes, 30 Latino and eight black inmates joined the fight, dividing along racial lines.

About 14 of the inmates began throwing trays and other objects before deputies were able to calm the violence, Ramirez said. All of the fighting inmates were transferred from the 83-man dormitory to other parts of the facility.

One inmate suffered a possible broken foot and six others were bruised in the fight. All were treated in the jail infirmary.

The cause of the argument was unclear, Ramirez said.
