NATIONAL LEAGUE ROUNDUP : Bonilla’s Power Trip Continues for Mets

Bobby Bonilla appears to have rediscovered the swing that helped make him a multimillionaire.

Bonilla, signed as a free agent by the New York Mets before last season, hit his fourth home run in three days Monday as the New York Mets beat the Chicago Cubs, 9-5, at Chicago.

Bonilla, who hit 19 homers in 128 games last season, led off the second inning with his 13th homer to give the Mets a 1-0 lead.

Bonilla, fourth in the league in homers, drove in 24 runs in May. Since May 12, he is batting .310 (20 for 62) with seven homers and 14 runs batted in.

Howard Johnson led the Mets’ 11-hit attack with a bases-loaded triple during a five-run fifth inning against starter Mike Harkey (5-2).

“Dallas (Green) has been working with me,” Johnson said. “He gave me a couple of days off. I’ve been struggling lately and they’ve been working on my mechanics.”

Paul Gibson (1-0), the third New York pitcher, was the winner. John Franco got the last three outs, including a game-ending double play.

Eric Hillman, making his fifth start for the Mets since being recalled from triple-A Norfolk on May 10 for an ailing Sid Fernandez, gave up four runs and eight hits in 4 1/3 innings.

Harkey gave up six runs, four unearned, and seven hits in five innings.

Todd Hundley hit his fifth homer for the Mets.

Cincinnati 6, Philadelphia 4--Jeff Branson singled home the go-ahead run during the eighth inning at Cincinnati after a balk call set up the rally and set off the Phillies.

Home plate umpire Bob Davidson called a balk on Larry Andersen (2-1) with two on in the eighth. Phillie catcher Darren Daulton and Manager Jim Fregosi were ejected.

Joe Oliver followed with an infield single to drive in the tying run.

David West gave up a bases-loaded, one-out single to Branson that made the score 5-4, and walked Barry Larkin with the bases loaded.

Jeff Reardon (1-0) pitched out of a bases-loaded jam during the eighth. Rob Dibble held the lead in the ninth for his first save since coming off the disabled list Friday.

Atlanta 2, San Diego 1--Greg Maddux got his 100th victory when Damon Berryhill doubled home the winning run during the ninth inning at Atlanta.

Maddux (5-4) gave up five singles, walked four and struck out seven in his second complete game. He is 100-78 in his seventh major league season.

Sid Bream opened the ninth with a double against reliever Roger Mason (0-2). Brian Hunter ran for Bream and Berryhill followed with his double to the right-center field wall.

Houston 2, Montreal 1--Craig Biggio doubled twice and scored the go-ahead run on Steve Finley’s sacrifice fly during the eighth at Houston.

Reliever Doug Jones (2-4) worked two innings for the victory.

Colorado 6, Pittsburgh 2--Alex Cole and Andres Galarraga each drove in two runs, and Armando Reynoso (3-2) pitched his third complete game as the Rockies ended a four-game losing streak with the victory at Denver.
