Super-Flyweight Bout on Tap at Country Club

Henry Lopez of San Diego has been signed to fight Cecilio (El Torito) Espino of Michoacan, Mexico, in a 10-round, super-flyweight headline bout at Tony Longval’s Country Club in Reseda on June 16. Espino (24-3, 20 knockouts) is the World Boxing Council’s ninth-ranked super-flyweight. He is coming off a fifth-round knockout of Elio Dominguez in February at the Hollywood Palladium. Lopez is 22-8-1 with eight knockouts.

The co-feature is a rematch between 1988 Olympic welterweight gold medalist Napunyi (Robert) Wangila (19-3, 14 knockouts) of Kenya and Sacramento’s Will Hernandez (10-8-1, seven knockouts). Hernandez knocked out Wangila in the eighth round last year in Las Vegas. They are scheduled to box 10 rounds in the junior-middleweight (154-159 pounds) division.

There are six bouts on the undercard, beginning at 7:30 p.m. North Hollywood junior middleweight P.J. Goossen (7-0, six knockouts) is scheduled to go six rounds against Adolfo Gasca (1-2) of Los Angeles. P.J.’s brother, Chuck Goossen (2-0, two knockouts) is scheduled for a four-rounder against a lightweight to be signed.

Ray Ray (Baby Animal) Villanueva will face Belize’s Danny William (0-2-1) in a middleweight bout; super-middleweight Gonzalo Ramirez (7-4-1, four knockouts) of Azusa will face San Diego’s Juan Vargas (6-3, two knockouts) in a five-round bout; Azusa’s Randy Smith (4-1-1) is matched against Ruben Reyna of Bakersfield in a four-round super-middleweight fight and Harout Ter Panosian (2-1), a Valley fighter originally from Armenia, is scheduled to go four rounds against middleweight Luis Meija (4-5) of Irvine.

Softball

The Southern Section has rescheduled the Division I softball championship game between Simi Valley and Los Alamitos highs from Saturday to Friday night, allowing Simi Valley supporters to attend both the school’s baseball and softball title contests.

Simi Valley (25-1-1) now will play Los Alamitos (24-3) for the softball championship Friday at 7:30 at Mayfair Park in Lakewood. The Simi Valley baseball team (27-3)--ranked No. 1 in the nation by USA Today--will play Esperanza (24-5) for the Division I title Saturday night at 7:30 at Anaheim Stadium.

The Pioneers are trying to win their first section baseball and softball championships.

Baseball

Outfielder Will Wallace of Quartz Hill High and shortstop Luis Alcarez of Palmdale have been selected co-most valuable players of the Golden League by coaches.

Quartz Hill, which won the league title, also landed four players on the first team, followed by Palmdale with three.

Wallace hit a league-high eight home runs, drove in 32 runs and batted .476. Alcarez, considered the league’s best defensive infielder, batted .451 and drove in 18 runs.

Daryl Hernandez, an All-Western State Conference first-team outfielder at Moorpark College, has signed with the University of San Francisco.

Hernandez, a sophomore center fielder from Simi Valley, batted .385--10th best in the WSC--and drove in 18 runs.

Football

The Ventura County East/West high school all-star football has been scheduled for June 12 at 7:30 p.m. at Larrabee Stadium in Ventura.

The most valuable player from each team will receive a $1,000 scholarship.

Sylmar High’s Ibn Bilal has accepted a football scholarship at Nevada Las Vegas. Bilal, a 6-foot, 185-pound tailback, gained 1,214 yards in 107 carries.

Bilal said UNLV recruiters were impressed with him on game films but that they thought they were watching teammate Tyrone Crenshaw.

“I was just lucky to be in the right place at the right time,” Bilal said.
