Gray Expected to Be Named Acting Assessor

Ventura County supervisors are expected Tuesday to appoint Glenn Gray, a longtime county employee, to serve as acting assessor.

Gray, now assistant assessor, said he would be pleased to take over the department’s top job, left vacant when county Assessor Jerry Sanford died after suffering a stroke in May.

“We’ll be able to go on with our work,” said Gray, 54. “We are going through some tough times right now with our budget and everything else.”

If appointed, Gray will serve the remainder of Sanford’s term, which expires in January, 1995. Gray said he had not yet decided if he will seek election to the $102,780-a-year position.

Gray has been with the assessor’s office since 1962. In 1986, he was promoted to the assistant assessor position and has been responsible for the day-to-day operations and fiscal administration of the office.

“He has got a very good reputation,” Supervisor Vicky Howard said. “He has been Jerry’s right-hand person for quite a while.”

Meanwhile, Supervisor Maggie Kildee said she is withdrawing her request that the county look into the possibility of combining the positions of assessor and treasurer-tax collector.

State legislation that would have allowed counties to combine the two offices has been dropped, she said.
