GLENDALE : Parcel to Be Bought for Seniors Complex

The Glendale Housing Authority on Tuesday approved purchase of the second of six properties that the city plans to acquire for development of a 70-unit apartment complex for low-income senior citizens.

The authority agreed to pay $215,000 to Glen and Sandra Ireland for property that they own at 329 W. Garfield Ave. The city earlier purchased another property, at 311 W. Garfield Ave., for $183,000 from Mary Furgeson.

The purchases are the first in a series of actions approved last month when the authority set aside $2.1 million in redevelopment funds as the city’s contribution toward the proposed Silvercrest Senior Housing Project, to be built by the Salvation Army.

Total development costs are expected to exceed $7 million, with the bulk of the funds coming from the federal Department of Housing and Urban Development, officials said.

The city expects to spend $1.5 million to acquire the six lots at 311-329 W. Garfield Ave. in southwest Glendale.

Construction of the senior citizens project is not expected to begin for more than a year and will require another year to complete, officials said.
