Long Beach : Police Complaint Panel Becomes More Accessible
Stung by complaints that it is inaccessible to the public, the Citizen Police Complaint Commission plans to open three new satellite locations one day a week.
Beginning June 21, residents can file complaints of misconduct against officers between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Mondays at the Central Facilities Center, 1133 Rhea St.; Tuesdays at North Facilities Center, 6335 Myrtle Ave., and Wednesdays at the West Facilities Center, 2125 Santa Fe Ave.
Residents may continue to file complaints with the civilian commission, which is charged with investigating such claims, at the board’s main office in City Hall, 333 West Ocean Blvd.
City officials agreed to have a commission staff member at each facility center one day a week following complaints from the local branch of the National Assn. for the Advancement of Colored People. Critics said that City Hall is too intimidating a place to file a claim against police.
