A Santa Ana man was killed early Saturday when the vehicle he was driving struck a curb on Magnolia Avenue and flipped, throwing two of its four occupants.

Police said paramedics pronounced the driver dead at the scene shortly after the 2:43 a.m. incident in the 1200 block of Magnolia. No other vehicles were involved, but a passenger was taken to UCI Medical Center in Orange. He is listed in serious condition.

The two remaining passengers fled, police said.

Identities of the driver and the hospitalized passenger were withheld pending notification of relatives, police said.

The 1986 Ford Bronco was traveling south from the Santa Ana Freeway at 40 to 45 m.p.h. when, “for unknown reasons, the vehicle swerved to the right, striking the west curb of Magnolia” and causing it to overturn, police Sgt. Thomas Lahmon said.

Lahmon said he did not know if drugs or alcohol were a factor in the incident, or whether the occupants were wearing seat belts.
