VENTURA : Benefit to Raise Dump Fight Funds
Opponents of the proposed Weldon Canyon landfill gathered Tuesday at the Ventura Theater to reiterate their position and promote a benefit concert to raise money for their cause.
“We want to raise funds and raise the awareness level of what’s going on,” benefit producer and Ojai resident Connie Hillman said during a news conference at the theater.
The county Planning Commission last week granted landfill operators Waste Management of North America a six-month delay in hearings on the proposed dump, which would operate in a canyon between Ventura and Ojai.
The city of Ojai has appealed the decision to the Board of Supervisors, hoping to force the matter to a speedy vote. The board is expected to reject the plan.
Performers at the all-acoustic event include Jackson Browne, David Crosby, Kenny Loggins and the Desert Rose Band, who will perform in shows at 7 and 9:30 p.m.
Coalition members said they hope the sale of concert tickets, T-shirts and specially labeled Dump Weldon Chardonnay will boost their coffers by $37,000.
The money will be used to file a lawsuit if the proposed landfill is approved, Hillman said.
Tickets are $25 for general admission and $15 for balcony seating.
