BASEBALL DAILY REPORT : ANGELS : Farrell Is Sent to Minors

Share

The Angels, determining that they no longer can afford to remain patient with their rotation, made sweeping changes Wednesday that included optioning John Farrell to triple-A Vancouver.

The Angels will call up rookie Hilly Hathaway from Vancouver (7-0, 4.09 earned-run average) and start him Friday against the Chicago White Sox; insert Russ Springer into the rotation and start him Sunday against the White Sox, and move Julio Valera back to the bullpen where he is expected to stay the remainder of the season.

“We’ve exhausted everything,” Angel Manager Buck Rodgers said. “(Farrell) needed to leave here mentally. He was pitching not to lose instead of to win.”

Third baseman Kelly Gruber, who has missed the last two games because of a strained left shoulder and stiff neck, says he will undergo treatment today by a masseuse and hopes to be able to play tonight in the series finale against Texas.
