Dividing California

Share

* In response to “Assembly OKs Bill To Divide State,” June 11:

The only thing sillier than making glorious California into the laughingstock of the world by chopping it into California I, California II and California III, is for glorious little Rhode Island to somehow make itself bigger.

* Make that four--or more--new states! If the state Senate and the governor lack the common sense to mercifully kill the state-splitting proposal, at least let them understand some probable consequences. San Diegans would never consent to a shotgun wedding with the greatly troubled megalopolis 140 miles to their north. Los Angeles has always been our salutary example of how not to deal with such urban problems as race relations, police behavior, pollution, and coastal development.

I’m certain that even stronger arguments can be made against creating a Yugoslavia right at home, especially those related to the economy. Or is all of this because the Legislature has no time for serious concerns?

* Split California into only three states? That would give us six U.S. senators. Our population deserves more than that.

When Texas joined the Union it reserved the right to separate into five states. That would be 10 senators.

* Split California into three states?

Three governors; six senators; three administrations; federal dollars for three states. We know where the money is going to; where is the money going to come from?
